how dangerous are these times
We Americans have a short memory. I am so tired of hearing this nonsense about how this is the most dangerous period of time in American History. If that is how you truly feel, then I say the Bush administration has done it’s job of brainwashing you and all those people like you. You fear terrorism? You fear an Ideal that is followed by so few people in the world it’s almost impossible to find them. They amass so little force that their best shot is 2900 KIA Americans sense their first attack at the World Trade Center in the nineties, we kill more on our highways every month. So what could they do now, very little, dirty bomb, maybe a few hundred dead and an area of real estate that becomes useless. Come on folks these pin prick attacks amount to little more than a nuisance. Yes it is tragic when any American dies, or any Iraqi, Korean or any one else. Still you have to keep it all in perspective. Think back, to a time when the Russians had Strategic Nuclear Missiles in Cuba, very nasty, very dirty, very capable 200 mega ton weapons. At the same time, the Russians were lead by a maniacal zealot who wished to see us dead. As school kids we practiced bomb drills almost every day, knowing full well how futile the bomb drills were in the face of such devastating weapons. The saying at the time was, we’ll all go together when we go.
That was one brief moment in our history. The cold war lasted 40 years and kept us under the threat of nuclear attack the whole time We lost untold numbers of cold war soldiers to situations we today still do not understand, but yet we have seen worse in this country. In the early forties the Germans ran submarine patrols off the east coast of the United states sinking Ships on almost a daily basis while at the same time the Japanese were designing weapons they could launch from Japan and attack the western United States. At that point in time you could really say that the world was divided, which meant that some where around half the world was out to see the United States go under. Worse yet and more to the point, Civil War, nothing compared to the threat of total destruction for our beloved nation caused by our own division. We came very close to complete ruin, is that the threat terrorism generates, complete and otter destruction of our lands, people, our children, our way of life.
You people need to keep all these threats in perspective, not let the zealot right wingers drive a wedge of paranoia through the heart of our beautiful American culture. Sure the threat is real, and yes Americans have died, and many more will likely die before we’ve managed the situation into one that eliminates the threat. We do not need to change our way of life to better deal with today’s threats, we need better and more thoughtful management of the situations by our leadership. We can not sustain this war on terror if we can not out think our adversary, and we will fail if our leadership continues to believe that the American people should remain in the dark. Dishonest leaders can obtain nothing but dishonest results from their actions.
I conclude that the real threat is internal, your leadership, as we learned with Richard Nixon, the biggest threat is an out of control right wing zealot with power. This administration is working overtime at mind and media control in an effort to hide the fact that they are not smart enough to take charge and get results. They want you afraid, it keeps the money and power flowing regardless of how poorly things are run.
